Frequently Asked Questions
Is ACE a separate course?
No. ACE is a supplement to a course lecture. Most science and math courses require a section in addition to the course to provide small-group discussion of the course material. ACE replaces these discussion sections.
What’s different about ACE sections, anyway?
- Time. ACE sections meet four hours per week in two hour blocks.
- ACE sections are not drop-in; attendance is mandatory.
- Students in ACE sections work together in small teams.
- Students do not do homework in ACE sections.
- ACE students spend a lot of time solving problems to do well on their exams.
Why don’t you focus on homework?
Homework is a basic assignment, not supplemental to the course.
Why don’t you offer sections in the class I’m taking?
We support classes that are introductory to a large number of science, engineering and math majors. Since our goal is to provide students with a strong foundation in science and math, we generally don’t support upper-division classes.
Can I find a tutor at ACE?
ACE is not a tutorial service, but if you need a tutor, talk to one of our staff about other campus resources or go to the Learning Support Services website.
How do I know if I’m accepted into an ACE section?
You will receive an email from the ACE program assistant with instructions about attending your ACE section including date, time and location of the first discussion section meeting. Attendance in ACE is mandatory and if you are not at the first meeting you will loose your priority enrollment status. The final ACE roster will be determined after the first class. The ACE section replaces the secondary discussion section that you chose when you enrolled through your student portal. ACE will notify your professor that you are attending the ACE section. You do not need to make changes to your enrollment.
What do I do if I’m on an ACE section waitlist?
If you are placed on an ACE section waitlist, you will also get email notification. Please do not come to section the first week. We will contact you if space becomes available.
